    My 3L ***Updated 7/3/09***

So I've finally gotten another Cougar. I bought Doublebackers Cougar.
After going to buy a new battery to get it to start, and then re-rigging the throttle cable to actually be able to use the throttle, I got it home. lol
Well, I knew it needed work... but no idea how much. lol... oops

Can anybody tell me where the unhooked plug "might" go? lol (red arrows)

Need to fix the passenger window so I can replace the carpeting. It's got a nasty backfire, and idles ridiculously high... lots of work to be done

    Anyway, pictures of the kitty...

Re: My 3L *56k, not so much*

I believe from what its running from it looks like the connection for the IMRC (which you do not have any more obviously).
Your venting into atmosphere from your valve covers so you are running rich since you are loosing metered air.
use carb cleaner and check ALL vacuum connections, that would be a good reason for the high idle and runnign rich.
Also, what injectors are you running and is it tuned?

That plug is for the IMRC wich you no longer have, you'll need to have it tuned out if you haven't already. That clear plastic tube need to be changed, that kink can't be good for the vacume lines.

If your car is untuned, there is a good chance the car is running rich becouse its running the 3l injectors. I would recomend keeping the 3l injectors over stock 17s.

Lastly make sure everything is bolted down properly, I can see allready missing bolts around the throttle body.

first you should be running the 3L injectors because they are matched to the oval port intake. yes the split port injectors will work but it isn't ideal.

as noted the connector is for the imrc. if will run ok untuned but it needs a tune asap. above the imrc point will run fine without a tune. below that it needs alot of timing to run right.

also as noted there is a metered air leak with the breather on the valve cover. that needs to be connected back to the intake after the maf.

also the fuel rail looks pretty scary. looks like a hacked up 2.5L fuel rail. for safety I would get the correct 3L fuel rail and the NPG fuel mod for the return fuel system. and actually I don't know how the 2.5L rail was made to work as the injectors are in a different possition. could be a vacuum leak at the injectors causing the high idle.

It did come w/ a tune, but unsure if the tune is correct or not, (also came w/ the xcal 2, I restored it to stock, and it ran worse so I put the tune back on)

I was aware of the vavle cover vent, I knew that needed changing back to original setup. (I didn't exactly know what effect that would have so thanks)

I haven't taken the injectors out, but I was *told* that its running 3L injectors, and it looks to be a 3L fuel rail, and a stock 2.5L fuel rail cut up and mated together w/ some rubber fuel hose and some hose clamps.

Lots of work to go into this kitty...

btw, what throttle cable should this be using... (it has a stock 2.5L throttle cable on it now which was cut, mangled and spliced to half ass work)

(anybody have one laying around? if so PM me.)

Re: My 3L *56k, not so much*

doublebacker4l69: 99' (return) MTX with CC Stage II clutch, 3.0 UIM/LIM, true #24 injectors, short-ram intake, WR Headers/Y-pipe, CC test pipe, TruBendz 3 inch catback w/ Borla muffler.

this is what the car "has" according to the 3L registry (cough, time to update Trevor lol)

here's info from the FS thread:

It is an older 99' Cougar with the return style fuel system. MTX, leather (rough), very clean dash, sport package (4-wheel disk brakes and no top speed lim.). The car itself has 110,000 miles, and the paint is a little bit rough (rock chips, and a couple strips where the paint is missing).

-Full 3.0 swap, motor is from an 01' Taurus and has 33,000 miles
    -True #24 injectors
    -Short-ram intake
    -Denso Iridium plugs
    -SVT flywheel
    -Weapon-R headers
    -Weapon-R Y-pipe
    -CC Stainless test pipe
-CC Stainless 3 inch cat-back with Borla muffler
    -Competition Clutch stage 2 clutch
    -Billet aluminum short throw
    -Brand new alternator

    -90% tread on front tires
    -15% on rear

well if its running 3L injectors then it will need a tune. its going to run way rich on the stock tune and you shouldn't do that at all. now the tune could be off if it was done with that valve cover breather in place. chances are once you straighten everything out you will need to have it re-tuned.

and make sure you do something about that fuel rail.

I think its time to pull thing apart to find out whats going on.

It's a full 3L swap, so what should I be running for the fuel rail, assuming 3L injectors, and its a 99 return style. (i've read around and seems like many people are running many different setups, I just want some opinions) Thanks!

    Oh, and FWIW,
I put the stock tune on it yesterday, and it stopped backfiring, put the tune back on that was in the programmer (supposedly the correct tune for the car/mods) and it was backfiring again.
