3.0 Swap gurus

Hello i purchased a 3.0 from a ford escape 1 i guess a year and a half ago. Well i removed the heads and timing cover and sent the heads to kinger to be P&P'd its almost a year later and i still havent done anything with the motor its still under my shed under a tarp and a big thick piece of plastic. My question is did i just make a big paper weight out of this motor. Every time ive checked under the tarp the cylinders look good and so does everything else its upside down to prevent water from pooling but im still a little worried. What ya think

Re: 3.0 Swap gurus

I never list to see an open shortblock sit that long without being properly preserved with grease and/or assembly lube. Rotate the engine after GENEROUSLY spraying all cylinders and the crankshaft journals (main and rod) with oil (WD-40 in a pinch, but that's not really the same thing).

You're looking for any binding of the crank, any rust in the cylinders, and any grooves created by standing water in the cylinder. If any of these exist, you need a bore, polish, new bearings, new rings, & rebuild.

Re: 3.0 Swap gurus

Its plenty oily, like i said when i look @ the cylinder walls it all looks good. I have to take the oil pan off to get a real good look and make sure. the motor was used and full of oul when i tipped it upside down mostlikely the back side of the cylinders are covered in oil. The fronts looked fine last time i cheked and so did the pistons but i worry. I allready have new rod bearings. I guess i should get a good camera and take some pics to give you guys a better idea of what im saying. Everything looks good but im still a little worried.

Re: 3.0 Swap gurus

just make sure that the bores are fine, they feel smooth to the touch. as long as there are no rusting spots and everything feels good then you shouldnt worry. the fact that you stored it upside down under a tarp is good thing. the best is to put it into a big garbage bag and tie it tight. Ive done that with a couple bare blocks and they have always been good to go after several months.

Re: 3.0 Swap gurus

If no rust and there is still oil on the bores nothing to worry about
