3L cams to match the 3L upper and heads. Cams still seem to be a subject of debate; although, consensus appears to be that the SVT cams flow more, as does the 2.5L upper. The engine was rebuilt as a full/straight 3L prior to my purchasing it.

Re: Best Upgrade Ever: 3L

Maybe a Dumb question, but did the car just fire right up, no issues? What was the ordering of the plug wires to the coil pack? I ask b/c my full oval 3L sputters, coughs, back-fires and dies. It acts like the timing is screwed up. I tried swapping 1 & 3 and 4 & 6 to no avail. If I load the 3L warmonger tune, it won't start at all. The stock tune apparently fires in pairs so you get spark on intake and exhaust (1 & 5, 4 & 3, 2 & 6), so it makes sense that if the plug wires are hosed, the stock SVT tune will have a better shot of turning over than the 3L.

Re: Best Upgrade Ever: 3L

Follow the order listed on the coil pack or get a manual. You could also Ohm out the wires with a multimeter to make sure they are still good. You can also test the coil pack with a multimeter to verify it's still good.

Double and triple check to make sure you plugged all the air ports on the 3L upper intake manifold. If you didn't you'll have a huge vacuum leak and it will run like you are describing above.

Re: Best Upgrade Ever: 3L

I've wired it (new wires) according to the labels on the coil pack. But how are the cylinders numbered on the 3L Escape motor? My FSM doesn't give this info.

Re: Best Upgrade Ever: 3L

There is no difference between the 3L and the 2.5L spark plug wiring. If you followed the 2.5L instructions they should be on correctly. It should be listed like this on the coil pack:

(windshield)
465
321
(front bumper)

Where the cylinders on the motor look like this.

(windshield)
123
456

(front bumper)

So make sure 5 and 6 wires are installed correctly on the coil pack.

Re: Best Upgrade Ever: 3L

Well, crap. That's how I have it wired. So it's not a plug wire issue.

Thanks for the info.

Did you replace your plugs during the swap? What kind are you using? Are you using your existing coil pack?

Re: Best Upgrade Ever: 3L

Existing SVT coilpack, new wires. Plugs are the ones that came in the Escape 3L (only 7K miles).
