Anybody with aftermarket headers had a smog check?

I've had the MSDS exhaust manifolds and Y-pipe sitting in my garage for a few months now and I've contemplating whether or not to have them installed because the car will have to pass a smog check within the next year. Anybody passed with them? More specifically, anyone in California with them on?

Ive passed NJ emmission testing with headers.. no problems.

Two people that I know off off-hand (myself, and EL CID 98) have passed DC emissions with the headers. Also check CEG- I'm sure there are tons.

I passed my tests with a SHM header this last Spring, prior to the change to the new Dyno style tests here in CA. emissions won't be a factor but you will need to have a "friendly" inspector that doesn't look closely at your car.. If you have modified your exhaust system in any manner, you are no longer legal in CA or any other state in the US.

When did you go through inspection? I live in NJ and they failed me for an aftermarket shift knob! I sware it!!

Did they dyno your car on the new system?

I have been told that if you remove the precats, you will fail in NJ.

I really want to do this mod, but I don't need any more problems with the friggin DMV.

If i where that worried i would....

get an aftermarket ypipe with a removeable cat converter..

have a heavy duty cat converter fabricated to fit aftermarket ypipe...which i would install only for emissions testing.

I went in last december I believe.. They had my car on they dyno, emmisons were clean! I went to the Eatontown DMV and didnt have a problem. As long as you keep your car hot you shouldnt have a problem unless they take a look under your car and see aftermarket headers (which NJ doesnt do I believe). The guy actually complimented me on the sound of my car.

I would get them and not worry about it to much. Atleast for 2 years you will be able to enjoy.. if you fail, the worst thing you will have to do is get them removed then put back on again. Which is a big deal, but for the change they make to your car, they are worth it!

I havn't been to the Eatontown DMV in years. I went to Ridgewood last time, but I don't plan on going back there. They failed me for the shift knob, PIAA lights, and the A pilar gage pod. They got me for all of that, but never tested the horn or high beams. A real bunch of jerks!!

How much do the MSDS headers go for?

I believe they are like 650 or something like that.
