The Duratec does have a coil; what it does not have is a distributor. There are no aftermarket coils for our cars although there are a number of aftermarket ingition systems that people have used and gotten good results from. These systems include the MSD DIS-4, the Jacob's Electronics Energy Pak and the B&M New Volt Power Supply.
As far as ignition timing goes, that is controlled by the computer. Although, it can be altered with the aid of a chip.

Not "a" coil but a coil pack of three individual coils..
I have been running a Jacobs Energy Pack (DIS) for over a year and have just disconnected it this month.. It works well with a stock ignition setup but has problems in a custom environment..
