    differences between st220 and cougar

    I have just had a new motor put in my 16k mile old Cougar and on the delivery note stuck to the shipping crate the engine was called a 2.5 mondeo 170ps. What would it have been called if it was for an ST24/2000/220 ? Are the differences solely down to the intake/exhaust set up or is there more to it than that.

    Does putting an st24/200/220 intake system and exhaust on a Cougar give and immediate 50 BHP gain?

    differences between st220 and cougar

    the st24 is a cougar with a duratec 2.5 and 170HP and better handling package

    the st200 is a Mondeo (aka Svt contour in america) with a 2.5 Duratec engine 200 HP

    the st220 is a Mondeo on available on europe is a 2.5 duratec engine with 220 HP

    the difence on power is the some have higher compression ratio and more aggressive cams with a re-worked ECU
    hope this helps

    differences between st220 and cougar

    The ST220 has a 3.0 litre engine not a 2.5 litre engine. The 3.0L engine in the ST220 is different from the typical Taurus 3.0L engines in that it has direct acting valve buckets like the Lincoln LS 3.0L.

    ok so just changing the exhausts and intake system doesn't take it to st24 spec then? What extra in horsepower terms would that bring?

    differences between st220 and cougar

    ST220 = 220 hp
    ST200 = 200 hp
    ST24 = 170hp

    Regular Duratec 2.5L = 170hp
    SVT Duratec 2.5L = 195-205hp depending on year ... someone care to clarify?

    So, ST220 speced swap would increase HP by 50! Your basic 3.0 swap will net around 180 to the ground ... roughly a 30hp increase. Like Fern has said, the ST220 is like doing a Lincoln LS 3.0 swap since the heads are the same and would be more conducive to High RPM applications. I personally would like to go this route if I still had my Cougar. Taurus block with LS heads or full LS block. The problem exist that the LS swap is more complicated due to the FEAD being different because of the longitudinal orientation vs. horizontal that our cars take. Therefore, I think that a Jag 3.0 swap would be most beneficial since it incorporates all the 3.0 technology with the horizontal layout. It also adds an aditional 11 hp to the tune of 231hp last I checked. However, Jag engines are HARD to come by and will cost you an arm, a leg, a testicle and your first born male child!!!

    the extra 5hp comes from the dual extrude honing of the intake and IIRC the UIM ports are a tad bigger.

    By clarify, I meant which years make what HP. I also think part of the power increase was from a few tenths of a point increase in compression ratio. Last year the CSVT was available, 2001, the compression was 10.25:1 IIRC and these engines made the 205 hp. Just looking for more info on the previous models. Thanks!

    All that the ST24 has is a suspension upgrade. I think it is the same suspension setup as the ST200. So you can go to your local Ford dealer and order up a set of Ford ST24/ST200 struts, Ford ST24 spec springs (might as well get H&R, Eibachs, etc. instead), and the ST24/ST200-spec anti-sway bars may also be unique... probably 20mm rear and 18mm front like the Contour SVT but I'm not sure. My cousin in Portugal has a Mondeo ST24 and I'll ask him if he knows what the differences are exactly. The parts guy at your local Ford dealer should be able to find out easily.

    I'm not going to worry my pretty little head about it. Terry Haines is going to work all that stuff out.
