From what I have seen man a drop in would be better. I still don't know exactly why open filters seem to slow cars down, my guess is that it is nothing but hot ass engine air, plus no exaust set up to allow the engine to fully breathe. A drop in would allow more air into the engine, but not too much and not all that engine bay air.
I have talked to a few people with all kinds of cars and all of them that put an intake on with no exaust felt a loss in power.

I took my intake off tonight and put my stock air box back on, and when i drove i was like WTF it felt like there was much more low end torque and the car acclerated much better. I think im gonna keep the stock air box on and just put a drop in K&N air filter. Maybe after i get a real good exhaust setup on and Svt upper intake manifold with the svt throttle body then by then hopefully there will be some sort of a ram air setup or even just a cold air intake.
Yea that is what I was talking about, when I put my stock air box back in I kept slamming into the rev limiter, something I never did before. The automatic assumption is that my timing was off (the timing in my head not the engine) and I would wait until my normal shift point but the limiter came more quickly than with the intake on.

I noticed the same thing with my ATX. You were right from the start though. I was checking out the engine bay on my v6 atx and i highly doubt a cold air setup is even possible, i dont know though i guess a ram air setup is the only way to go.
