SVT Block put in 99 cougar head wouldn't work with the return style fuel system

My question to you all is where do I go from here? I have the upper intake, throttle body and the PCM from the svt. Will the oem intake work for awhile. I've been thinking of swapping in a 3L with the svt intake but what else would I need. Or should I just put the intake back on with the 19lb injectors PCM what else do I need to make this work? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Could you clarify what you're asking a bit? Also, by intake I'm assuming you're meaning the plenum and not the accordion tube/filter?

Ya that's what I mean. I guess my fuel system on my car is return style so the shop putting in the engine just said screw it and didn't want to wire up what needed to be done so they threw on the old engines plenum and stuff. Is it not worth it to change the car to a return less setup? And if it is what needs done? Also should I just swAp a 3l in?

Re: SVT Block put in 99 cougar head wouldn't work with the return style fuel system

It is not worth the work to do a proper conversion to returnless especially since there were issues with the returnless system if I recall correctly. There are return style SVT parts out there so just wait for some to turn up. The intake manifolds have nothing to do with the fuel system type so they will work fine. If you have an SVT or 01/02 Cougar lower intake manifold with a returnless style fuel rail attached simply remove it and install your return style rail. If the #19 injectors you have are green then they're returnless style and if they're orange they're return style. Double check on whether the ECU you have is from a return or returnless SVT. If it's returnless then sell it and buy a return ECU or have a Ford dealership reprogram it. You'll have to have Ford do some programming anyway since your keys will need to be programmed to match the new ECU. If you were to try and start the car without the reprogrammed keys the ECU will think you're attempting to steal the car and immobilize every system having to do with starting/running.

Yes you could do a 3L swap, but to do it proper takes money. If you're not doing the work expect to pay a premium. The simplest way to get an engine that will be in great condition is from here. You'll then have to get a tune, however, for it to run correctly and those aren't cheap as well as some other various things.

If you're a bit confused by any of this, then don't start thinking of 3L swaps. This is not a fast car and not knowing what you're doing while trying to make it faster will just take a lot of money and make a bit of a mess. Stay simple and go with the SVT Lite, maybe swap the injectors and ECU if you're feeling adventurous.

What is the problem exactly? I'm confused. All I can think of is that the injectors are different or you have an '00 SVT fuel rail. You can splice the correct pigtails on the harness, or switch injectors.

'98-99 SVTs have a return fuel system. '00 SVTs are returnless. The heads and injectors are not "return or returnless". Only the injector plug style changed. Return fuel rails have a return port obviously.

Re: SVT Block put in 99 cougar head wouldn't work with the return style fuel system

From my understanding he wanted a shop to install an SVT Lite along with an SVT ECU and injector set. As a '99 he's got a return system, but one or more of the components dealing with the fuel system are returnless style. A shop won't modify the injector connectors and I don't think he wants/knows how to do the work himself.

Yeah, I kinda gathered that, but he also states "SVT Block put in 99 cougar"... so why didn't he go all the way with the SVT swap? I've never performed an SVT swap in a Cougar, but I've owned and modded Contours and Cougars, including several 3L swaps. The only differences I can think of are the injector connections, and maybe some other minor wiring stuff like oil pressure and coolant temp (connectors varied). And if a shop can't splice a few connectors.... find a different shop. I wouldn't trust them to rotate my wheels.
