Wanna Go Fast
Ok....I know you guys hate when ppl post questions that have already been posted several times. I've tried to do my research on here but its difficult for me. I'm in the navy and deployed in the west pacific and I don't have alot of sit down time to do research....and when I do the comps hardly wanna work.
But anyways...my problem is I have a stock 2002 2.5L Duratec ATX Cougar.....and like anyone else I wanna go fast in it. But I keep getting **** from my friend about my cougar not being a performance oriented car and that his SRT4 Neon is much better.....i'm not sure if the upgrades I could afford would help me beat his Turbo family car. But the point is I want to know what performance parts I can buy for my car and whom I can get them through. I've seen alot of different parts on here and I can't seem to find them anywhere. If anyone or everyone could just compile a list of parts and manufactuers for them I would highly appreciate it. Right now I'm saving all my money so I can start working on my car once I get back home. I'm looking for everything........headers, intakes, intake manifolds, cams, pretty much anything I can upgrade on my car.........Thanks much. |

Re: Wanna Go Fast
3L Duratec - That's where you will need to get the 3L Engine to drop in place of the 2.5L
^ You can also get a supercharger kit there. Nautilus Performance Group - Or you can go there for a Turbo/Supercharger kit 99-02 Cougar: Pro-Motion Tuning, LLC - And there is some random parts for the Cougar there. MSDS Inc. - Air Intake Systems - Good headers there You basically just have to start off with a new engine, or at least turbo/supercharge it right off the bat (which would take some internal upgrades and odds n ends anyways). If you think any other route, you won't be fast enough for what you are thinking. An MTX conversion would be a good idea too, so you can get rid of that automatic. I don't know how much money you have to spend, so I'll stop now. Haha. Good luck, and be safe! Go fast on the track, not on the streets. - Oh, and your best way to find the cams, intake manifolds, cold air intakes, etc is to browse the for sale section on these forums. Otherwise it's hard to find that stuff. OCASSIONALLY ebay has some stuff....lots of times listed by people on these boards or from CEG (Contour Enthusiasts Group)...

Re: Wanna Go Fast
If your dealing with budget, Get the SVT upper intake manifold, cams, headers, high flow cat, cat back exhaust (dont ask which is best just figure out from posted vids which sounds you like best). lighten up the car, (ie take out rear seats, lighter wheels, lighter suspension) the problem you are going to lie with is the ATX, prone to having issues so if you do not convert it to an mtx you need to atleast get a tranny cooler to keep it in one piece.
Hope that helps |

Re: Wanna Go Fast
Unfortunately...when it comes to "going fast in a cougar", you can NOT have a budget
![]() An ATX cougar though huh? yikes. The cougar in general, while it can be made a hell of a lot faster, it severely restricted by with the Automatic trans. And even WITH an Manual and every modification under the sun, has anyone ever broken into the 12's in the 1/4mile? The general rule is: Cougars are meant for handling... not flat out speed. |

Re: Wanna Go Fast
I think the lacking thing in the cougar actually is going quick (or not) more than going fast.
I know my 40 yr old automatic mustang with 1/2 the cylinders sounding like they are all but dead, can easily beat my cougar in quickness, but my cougar has a top speed a good 30mph faster than the mustang.

Re: Wanna Go Fast
Enjoy your good gas mileage and stop worrying about going fast. I rarely every use my "go fast" abilities getting to and from work. Being on here Ive never really seen a Cougar hit a 12. Even 13s meant either a lot of boost or nitrous and sticky tires, which also equates to lots of money for a car to run 13s. Its a waste. Mostly youll see dyno queens, but then again traction and driver skill isnt an issue on a dyno, so take that lightly.

Re: Wanna Go Fast
Yeah, what Goldie said. Cougars can be fast, but not that quick. Traction is a killer on this platform.
