Dual Exhaust

I have an 01 and I'm looking to get a dual exhaust kit for my cougar. This is the one I am currently considering, if anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know....

Re: Dual Exhaust

The flowmaster muffler is extremely loud. I'd recommend the magnaflow muffler or the borla. If I had to choose between those two I'd pick the magnaflow. Also since you are in Ohio I'd recommend the stainless steel version so the exhaust doesn't rust out after your first winter.

Re: Dual Exhaust

Is there a reason you're looking at the 3" exhaust? Unless you already have FI, or are planning on it, the 2.5" exhaust will give you better performance gains.

Re: Dual Exhaust

I have a Flowmaster dual kit, but it has Borla resonators out back. The trubendz kit has "truck tips" that make a loud exhaust even louder.

I agree on 2.5" pipe being plenty big.

Bottom line, if you are not adding a turbo or a blower, stay at 2.5". And if you don't want an OPPRESSIVELY loud exhaust note, stick with the Magnaflow, or resonate the Flowmaster system.

Re: Dual Exhaust

Well just how much do the two sizes contrast, like how much louder would the 3" be? would the 2.5'' give a better sound. Does any one of you know about what the changes in power will be for the two? I used to have a Cougar when I was 16, but totaled it before i got to really work on the performance aspect of it, so I am not too familiar when it comes down to it.... thanks again, I am going to order the exhaust either today or tomorrow, and I will definately let you all know how it all turns out once installed

Re: Dual Exhaust

The size is not about the loudness. It's about efficiency.

A 2.5" exhaust is the optimal diameter for thee amount of exhaust the 2.5L produces. It gives you the best exhaust velocity and cylinder scavenging, making the best power.

A 3-inch pipe will slow down the exhaust flow, and make a mess of the scavenging effect. A naturally aspirated 2.5 just doesn't displace enough exhaust gas to use a 3" diameter. You won't make as much power as you will with a 2.5", plus the weight of all that unnecessary extra steel is NEVER a good thing.

I could've swore 2 1/4 was deemed optimal
