I changed the oil atleast every 2,500 miles. the car had 105k on it when i bought it and the motor went at 118k.

Then I'll betcha I know what happened- This happened to a Contour I had to do an engine on. The previous owner changed the oil very infrequently (or rarely), you come along, start changing the oil regularly.
The detergents in the new and regularly changed oil start breaking down some of the built-up sludge and crap in the motor, frees up enough chunks of crap that then find their way to the oil pickup tube, boom- Clogged, engine fries its bearings. Or am I totally off base? Quote:
