Engine rpm stays at 3k

I've had this issue before, but since i put my cold air intake on, it's happened more often. It mostly happens in the morning when i first start my car. The engine will rev up to 3000rpms.. it will eventually fall down to normal.. but sometimes when i'm driving, it will just stay at 3000 rpms if i put it in neutral.. and if i give it a little more gas to get it to about 3200, it will stay there.. till i put it back into gear.. any ideas? I don't think it's a vacuum leak.. but it's possible..

edit.. is it possible the iat sensor could be causing this?

Re: Engine rpm stays at 3k

that was my first thought.. it's just warming up.. running real rich.. but then in the middle of the day when i leave work for lunch.. it really seems like it would be a vacuum leak.. but i've already check the common spots.. and tried carb cleaner all over.. my only major concern with it is my clutch is going out.. and when i try to shift, it just stays at 3k.. and pulls a little everytime i put it in gear.. i'm getting a new clutch sooner or later, but i'd like it to last until i get my engine built...

Re: Engine rpm stays at 3k

Is your CEL on? If you have some codes that might help.

As far as vacuum leaks, check the hose going from the intake manifold to the PCV Valve. That's one is in a not so obvious spot at the bottom block side of the intake manifold. My 98 Zetec Contour had a leak in that hose, which was causing a high idle.

Re: Engine rpm stays at 3k

I started getting lean codes, but that was at the throttle body, the way i mounted my cai.. Now that i think about it.. i've been getting an insufficient coolant temp. code.. hmmmm i wonder if that would do anything.. i'll get numbers a little later today and post them

Re: Engine rpm stays at 3k

Not a Cougar nor a Zetec, but when the IACV on my four cylinder daily driver began to fail, the car began to idle high, sometimes really high. It's not closing all the way so your getting more air than the computer thinks it's commanded. Would also explain the lean codes. Might want to check your IACV, as well as for vacuum leaks.

Re: Engine rpm stays at 3k

Do you really have a CAI on your 2.0 or just a SRI? If it really is a CAI, I'd like to see some pics.

Re: Engine rpm stays at 3k

Yea.. i had the idle issue a while back, replaced my IACV and it fixed it.. If you look behind the engine from the driver side of the car.. it's underneath the intake manifold i believe.. or maybe attached? It's when i'm driving that it's most annoying..

and yea.. cold air. I had it piped down to the front bumper, but now it's just next to transmission.. i took out all the piping to the front and gave it to my friend.. i'm trying to get my turbo deal worked out, so i'm not really that worried about having it to the front anymore.

To get it to the front i used 3 inch piping, took out cruise control module, ran it from throttle body, under the battery, moved the accumulator up a little bit, and fed some duct through the hole it left, then right up to the front grill, and popped out the little insert for "more airflow" rofl... i'll try to get some pics of what i have right now
