there is a lot of other stuff to taking an engine out, the major thing is unbolting the tranny, getting a cherry picker, unbolt engine mounts, taking off the wire harness, not to hard just a lil time consuming to do it right, where at in michigan because i can offer a hand when your doing it

Re: how to remove enigne without dropping subframe...
I just pulled the engine and tranny out together with an engine lift. You have to lift it out at an angle for that to work.
Here's a tip to remove the half-shafts: To remove the right side one just put something agianst the back side of it and knock it out with a hammer. Then to get the left side out: put a long skinny object into the tranny where the right shaft came out and tap the left one out from the inside with a hammer . And don't forget to remove the brake booster hose that's connected to the bottom of the intake manifold.

I tried the long skinny thing for the driver's side. That didn't work, I ended up buying a 3 foot (crow) man-bar. Came in from up top where the intake and the plastic coolant spliter should be. Took all of 3 secs. Just make sure and soak the y-pipe bolts a day before.

Re: how to remove enigne without dropping subframe...
pull the engine and trans as one. it is so much easier than trying to seperate them and get the engine out by itself. also it allows you to reconnect them easier outside of the car. you will have to remove the AC to pull them as one though.
its pretty straight forward though. just drain all the fluids, disconnect everything and start to pull it out. go slow so you can watch and make sure you didnt miss anything.

I just took mine out from my contour, and with an automatic, its heavier and a lot bigger case than the manuals, so you have to be more careful not to snag it on the brakes and fuel rail when you take it out. Slow and steady it will come.
