Re: so timing belt broke today

the belt normally isn't the problem. I changed the timing belt in my 95 at 104k and the belt looked really good. What didn't look good was the plastic pulleys for the timing belt. My tensioner was about to split in half and all of them where worn flat where they should of had raised sides to give the pulley a V like shape.

Again here I am just shy of 100k later and the belt looks great. I have to dig alittle more and see how the pulleys look. But then again the car is just a daily drive to and from work and around town for the most part so if it the belt lets go I am not that worried about it at this point in time with 200k ....

Re: so timing belt broke today

I had my timing belt swapped @ 130,000 miles; had a LOT of horizontal cracks on it, which were plain as day to see. If you're at or above 100k and you have the money to do it, get it done (tensioner pulleys too), just for peace of mind.

Re: so timing belt broke today

Not the same car but my dads 1999 zx2 with a zetec (I think it is the same zetec) just popped his water pump at 60k miles (yes a 99 with 60k miles on it, he doesn't drive much) which ended ups taking out the timing belt it sounds like. It isn't so expensive to replace these belts and worth the piece of mind to do the whole kit and keep the car running.

Really? The water pump would pretty much have to explode to do damage on the timing belt (timing belt is completely covered). Do you mean the serpentine belt? And yeah, only 60k on a water pump is crazy! Mine made it to 132k; started leaking, so I swapped it.

Re: so timing belt broke today

im leaving the atx alone, besdies a trans cooler. ive talked a bunch of shops and they say it should be fine with the power goals i have in mind, as long as i dont burn out all the time of course. i dont think ill have much of a problem getting it in in 4 weeks. i would say one night on finishing the motor. crank and pistons are already in and torqued. pulling the old one shouldnt be a huge deal, prolly a weekend to do it. and im planning on driving with the new one for a week or so then throwing the turbo at it. but while its down im going to do all the fab work, or mainly the manifold and some of the piping. its gonna be fun! ill try to take lots of pics too. also mine broke a lil after 116,000, and i also have an oil leak somewhere which might have helped that belt break.

4 weeks is more than enough time to get it done. i had mine done in about that time (or less) with only a few hrs at a time.

what manifold, turbo and wastegate are you going to be using?

Might be something different then. I have't seen the car yet but my understanding form the tow guy who my parents left their car with when they rented a car and left the state was that it was a siezed pump and it killed the belt. Maybe ZX2's build out different somehow.

when you go to the garrett/turbonetics go straight for the super 60. forget the 50 or 60 trims, you wont be disappointed. also, send me a PM before you buy one and ill send you a link to where i got mine for a damn good price.
