The actual bumper is plastic and servers only to support the bumper cover and provide marginal "buffer" in a slow (5-10 MPH) front end collision. It provides no safety benefit from what I can tell. Here is a good picture showing what I mean ... hit anything above 10 MPH and it will break into pieces ... that being said, I decided it was worth cutting into ... that determination needs to be made by the individual make the modifications.
