Sound on top end of motor

Sounds like a ball peen hammer hitting a block of woot, seems to match revs, very loud. I popped open the oil cap to watch the cams, and it's very well timed to the rotation of the lobes of the cams. Can't tell if it's front or rear bank. No metal shavings in the oil, so it may not bearing related or any shearing going on. No smoke in the exhaust, either.

Collapsed HLA? Vehicle power was otherwise normal, but the car isn't being driven since the sound was heard.
