So this is my thread to talk about my 3L build-up. I could make a post in the 3L forum, and another one in the forced induction forum, but then a bunch of newbies would be asking me more questions than I feel like fielding.
This will also give the MC-NECO folks, a good understanding of what's involved in doing this, as well as see just what the most "technically knowledgeable by capita" chapter NECO has to offer in terms of this type of work.
So this is actually my third 3L build. The first one went belly 950 miles after install due to a faulty timing chain. The second one lasted 3 years, 2 of which were under heavy nitrous usage. After much nitrous usage, rings start to wear, and well I started to consume oil, and spark plug #2 never looked worse. Given the cold weather is around, I figured its time to do it again. This time its going to be stupid.
The engine is getting completely rebuilt, by an engine shop. I went this route because they have all the tools to blueprint and balance the rotating assembly, as well as boring the cylinders, and do any other head work that is required. Since my dad retired, he kinda hangs around the shop, and acts like their gopher/parts runner. In turn I get labour for next to nothing.
Inside will be forged pistons (Diamond), rods (mfg TBD), and clevitte bearings all round. ARP studs will be used to keep everything bolted together. Up top, SVT cams, and I'm going back to the 2.5L style for the intake manifold, svt honed of course.
There will be a power adder, and lots of it. I currently have a nitrous kit, and I plan to keep it. At first, I thought to go with insane amounts of "naaawwwws" but its not as fun as hearing a blow off valve go off between shifts. Therefore I plan on going with a custom turbo setup, and if worse comes to worse (we don't get the turbo setup that makes sense) a S/C kit with upgraded pulley, is just around the corner.
I talked to jrak123, and it looks like he just needs a strong kick in the pants, and some motivation, as well as an extra set of hands. It should take us a few long weekends, but creating the piping kit for a turbo is well within means. And that's the route we plan on going. T3/T4 turbo, with a front mount intercooler. The turbo should get towards the 350hp under heavy boost. And to top it all off, since the nitrous kit is staying, I do plan on running a 50 shot, if you piss me off. All together that's about 400 in your face, get out of mine, horses. When I said I wanted 12 second quarter mile times, I wasn't joking
So that's the build up plan. In the process my car has gone through 6 years of mods. Some (most) of them have come and gone, and in doing so, may have left some evidence they were there before. As I prepare for the engine, revert some of the old mods, clean and do whatever, I'll keep this thread posted. Kinda like my 3L/winter rebuild blog.
I'm going to attempt to do all the pictures in this thread, being sourced from newcougar.org. However, I'm also going to keep all the pics on my personal server at home, just in case.
